Directing this was a blast. We wanted to something that felt very graphically stylized and the opposite of photo-realistic. This was way before “300,” before heavy compositing became common and so it was exciting new territory. Every shot was created by combining live action with 3D environments.
Young Julie Zhan let us cut her hair—a bold move that must have shocked her friends. We had models Karen MacDougal, Tori Wilson, and Claudia Jordan all together as Space Marines. Even more insane models were created by Joby Harris — guns, ships, and an entire city made from plastic cups, straws and 409 bottles.
